Your Easy Guide to Making Coffee
As we’ve said before, whether you’re a long black legend or just getting started, making great coffee doesn’t need to be complicated. We’ve put together this no-fuss guide to making your Espresso, Drip Coffee, and French Press. No fluff—just the good stuff.
1. Espresso
Espresso is the base for many coffee drinks, and while it might look fancy, once you get the hang of it, you’ll be pulling shots like a pro.
The measurements below are a good starting point, but if your shot tastes spot on, don’t worry about it being perfect. The key is the flavor, and if you're happy with it, you’re winning.
- Ratio: 1:2 (20g of coffee to 40g of espresso out)
- Grind: Fine, like table salt
- Brew Time: 28-32 seconds
Tip: When pulling a shot, you shouldn’t see any espresso for the first 5-6 seconds. After that, it should drip slowly before becoming a steady flow. If it starts flowing too early, make your grind finer—don't let your espresso jump the gun!
2. Coffee Maker (Drip Coffee)
Drip coffee is the no-fuss way to brew a smooth, balanced cup without all the drama of espresso.
- Ratio: 1:15 (1g of coffee to 15g of water)
- Grind: Medium, like sea salt
- Brew Time: Every machine’s different, so just let it work its magic while you relax
Tip: If you can, make sure all the coffee grounds are getting wet at the start of the brew. If you’re keen, give it a little stir with a spoon at the start to get the flavor out. If not, don’t stress, just let the machine do its thing—no one’s judging.
3. French Press
A French press is where coarsely ground coffee steeps in hot water, then gets separated by pressing a plunger through a mesh filter. The result? A bold, full-bodied brew.
- Ratio: 1:15 (1g of coffee to 15g of water)
- Grind: Coarse, like breadcrumbs
-
Brew Time: About 4 minutes
Tip: Give it a gentle stir after adding the water and before pressing—this helps everything blend nicely, so you don’t end up with a bitter mess.
Final Thoughts
At the end of the day, it’s all about fresh coffee. These guides are just a starting point— so feel free to play around with ratios and brew times. If your coffee doesn’t follow the rules exactly, who cares? If it tastes good, you’re doing just fine.
